Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Confirm pattern requirements
   • Pattern requirements for millinery are confirmed
   • Construction requirements are identified
2. Prepare materials
   • Materials required for millinery are prepared for use
   • Pattern is checked to confirm sizing
   • Minor adjustments are made to the pattern, where required
   • Fabric or material is checked for faults to ensure conformance to standards
   • Fabric or material is laid-up for cutting, as required
3. Cut material or fabric to pattern
   • Cutting tools and equipment, appropriate for the fabric, are selected
   • Laid-up material or fabric is cut to meet the pattern specifications
   • Cut work is inspected to ensure conformance to work specification
   • Faults are rectified and reported, where required
4. Fuse and sew millinery
   • Millinery pieces are matched and sewn or fused to meet the requirements of the pattern specifications
   • Machine operation is assessed in accordance with workplace and OHS practices
   • Sewn or fused pieces are inspected for quality and conformance to specifications
   • Faults are identified and appropriate action taken to ensure quality standards are met, where required
   • Recording and reporting is undertaken

Demonstrates knowledge of industry and product processes and equipment a knowledge of materials and their application in millinery manufacture including their composition and effects of temperature and steam pattern sizing and adjustment inspection and checking procedures safety and environmental aspects related to equipment operation workplace and reporting procedures OHS practices including hazard identification and control measures quality practices workplace practices recording and reporting practices

Demonstrates skills to use patterns to set out and cut materials visualise the finished product safely use cutting implements and sewing machines identify nonconforming materials or components assemble pieces to produce millinery apply the quality requirements for each stage of the process document assess and transfer information read interpret and follow information on work specifications standard operating procedures and work instructions and other reference material maintain accurate records communicate within the workplace sequence operations meet specifications clarify and check taskrelated information carry out work according to OHS practices
